The title is the American version with additions and corrections written by John William Draper, M.D., who is well-known in the daguerreian world. Possibly this is the daguerreian’s book, but it is equally possible this woman was a scientist herself. She wears a black dress and while quite classic it has a mesmerizing white collar which creates a wonderful illusion. It is hard to tell if this is a geometric cut-out or if it is black fabric alternating with the white. The photographer has skillfully tinted the tablecloth a lovely blue. The plate is in excellent minus with great tones and contrast and some light hues to her face and lips. It had old seals intact and we have now resealed it with a new glass. It is housed in a full late 1840’s leather case with a floral design.

Opening bid – $100

Lot 16 Vibrant sixth-plate daguerreotype of an intellectual woman wrapped in a gorgeous large, patterned shawl and with a special book, Kane’s Chemistry, edited by Harper, on the table next to her.
