We assume this is a bible but the size would seem to indicate it would have been a 18th or 19th century reprint of the King James edition. If anyone has any thoughts, please let us know.

Our sitter wears a simple outfit with a typical white bonnet as she sits stoically with her well worked hands crossed. Her one hand looks strange under magnification, with a large amount of loose looking skin that goes well beyond wrinkles. It is a wonderful study for exposure as when viewed at certain angles her face reads slightly light. However the daguerreotypist has applied his tint to appear natural, as with the well tinted flesh tones on her face and hands. An odd twist though is that the flesh tinting is not noticeable at an angle. The tablecloth has been tinted a light blue and the floral accents have a pinkish-red hue which once again appear stronger when properly viewing the image. This is certainly an interesting study in the art form of the daguerreotype. The plate is in excellent condition and it had old seals tightly attached. We have now resealed it with a new glass and it is housed in a bird in a nest case.

Opening bid $85

Lot 18 Mesmerizing sixth-plate daguerreotype of an older woman posed next to a humongous book on the table next to her.
