Thought provoking portrait

Intriguing sixth-plate daguerreotype of a woman in a three-quarter length pose. At first glance we might speculate that this is a mourning photograph considering all the black clothing. However, the young woman wears a slight smile and seems too casual in her appearance to be commemorating the passing of a loved one. Her ensemble is quite interesting: she wears a hooded jacket, with quilted collar and cuffs, lace veil and leather gloves while holding a purse with fringe attached at the end. The woman leans on a dark column and carries herself with the ease that comes from previous visits to a daguerreian gallery. The image is in excellent condition with a ring of perimeter tarnish and some light tinting to her face and lips. When held at an angle there are a few buffing lines visible. Also, the contrast between the black clothing and the background could be slightly more pronounced. It is a very thought-provoking portrait and is housed in a black-lacquered mother-of-pearl case with a repaired spine. $125 |
