Fashionable Woman

A wonderful sixth-plate daguerreotype of woman definitely trying to make a fashion statement. She wears a very strange outfit with a heavy black, (crocheted?), collar and a pyramid-patterned black fabric added at both mid-sleeve and cuff. Black lace fingerless gloves with a leaf or floral pattern, and a cute heart-shaped pendant around her neck complete the package. The image has a velvet stamped identification for R. Knecht, Artist, Easton, PA. According to Craig’s Registry, Reuben Knecht of Easton was issued a patent for a daguerreotype plate holder on February 7, 1854. In 1860 he was still listed as a daguerreotypist at 138 Northampton Street. The plate is in excellent condition, with a nice ring of perimeter tarnish visible. Light hand tinting has been applied to her face and lips. A small light blue plate flare is visible in the top left corner. This is a remarkably sharp and detailed image that had old seals still intact and now is resealed with new glass. In a full leather case.
