Swiss Family

Great ethnographic study of a group of women in regional costume. Quarter-plate ambrotype of a mother who assumes the authoritarian position in the center with her two daughters dutifully posed beside her, each standing with a hand on her shoulder. The younger women wear gold gilded crosses around their necks while the mother holds a rosary. The image was purchased by the previous owner with no cover glass. A heavy layer of period varnish originally applied to the ambrotype protected it from any major damage. At an angle some brush -type marks can be seen, some of which are in the varnish; however, these are not a distraction when viewing. The most visible are a line through the shoes of the woman on the left and one also extending through her arm near the perimeter. The image has been resealed with a modern paper mat in typical passe-partout presentation. It is suggested that this ambrotype might be of Swiss origin. A very unique ambrotype in very good condition.
