Southern Gentleman

Fantastic half-plate ambrotype of a fascinating Southern gentleman who makes quite an impression with his photograph. He exudes confidence with a slight air of superiority. We wouldn’t want to be in a card game with his man! There is something on the table next to him but we have been unable to identify it. The image is in very good condition with flesh tones throughout - including the man’s ears, which is seldom seen. Gold gilding has been added to his jewelry and the tones and contrast are very strong. It is a cutting patent style although not marked on the mat. There are a few spots and a couple of very minor mat marks visible. The preserver has separated in two spots. It is housed in a full leather case with some wear and a tiny bit of leather loss on the bottom front; the bottom rail also has some leather loss.
