Lot 29

Lot 29

Killer ninth-plate outdoor ambrotype of a man sporting a “ten-gallon” style hat and driving his large peddler’s wagon down a long road. It appears that he either just crossed a bridge or perhaps he drove by a long brick walled estate of one of his clients. He is identified in pencil on a part of a cut period card that reads, Uncle Al Page, Herman Page’s Uncle, Dorchester, Mass, Peddlers Cart. Uncle Al has a large load indicating that his business is going well. We see large sacks stacked in layers on the top with a basket, brooms, buckets and possibly walking sticks on the back left side. Next to Uncle Al is a box or basket that appears to have some cans, and we can see at least one feather duster. The poor small white horse pulling the wagon looks exhausted but there is likely still a long day to go! The image is in excellent condition with beautiful tones and contrast. It is about as perfect an exposure as you will find in an outdoor ambrotype. It also retains its original brown cloth backing. It is housed in a lovely brown geometric union case that is in excellent condition too.
