Lot 43

Splendid, slightly undersized half-plate tintype (4 1/8” x 5  1/4”) of a serene town scene and a traveling salesman posed with his horses and wagon. The rugged man holds the reins of the rig so the horses don’t get spooked. He has a long beard and wears a pair of worn work pants with suspenders for stability. We can’t be certain but it appears that he has a long, large knife in his pocket. His covered wagon is worn but still in nice shape and his grand horses are wearing fly nets. In the background we see a house with laundry on the clothesline and a blur of an object in the scene. The building to the left has posters or trade bills covering the outside wall. Unfortunately all we can see are images. The large building on the right appears to be the town hotel. This pleasing outdoor image is in very good condition with great tones and contrast. There are a few light bends that don’t distract in our opinion.
