Sharp and bright cdv occupational tintype of two women making spats. Short for spatterdashes or spatter guards, “spats” were worn primarily by men in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were usually made of white cloth or grey or brown felt or suede and buttoned around the ankle. Working off a pattern visible on the table, we see the woman on the left sewing the material together while the woman on the right is attaching buttons to fabric for another one. A fascinating, unusual occupational image.
