Lot 46
Great half-plate tintype of a carriage with a driver and two horses on what appears to be the beach. Another wagon is partially visible on the left perimeter so possibly this was a resort or tourist area. It is a nice carriage, with lights on both sides and a large amount of room on the inside. The driver is wearing common work clothes with a striped pair of pants. While a little difficult to see, the far left background shows a body of water with cliffs in the distance. You will also notice the wheels in the wagon are slightly sunk into the ground, but it also appears to be dry suggesting a sandy surface. The image is in very good minus condition with decent tones and contrast. We see a little bubbling on the top and bottom perimeter but under close examination they seem stable. Underneath the mat there is some loss at the top perimeter and we have now sealed this image to prevent any moisture problems in the future. The image is housed in a brown rare geometric union case, Berg 3-4. The case has loose hinges and a gap by the hinges so the clasps don’t latch properly. There is a chip on the front right side and a couple of rough spots just to the left of the nick. A hint of wear to the relief on the front but the back shows well. Both covers have a nice sheen.
Opening bid $75
