Extraordinary occupational tintype of a young black man shining the shoes of the man sitting in a chair next to him and leaning on his walking stick. Of note is that the crate being used is a Chicago photographer’s supply box with a name on it that we can’t fully decipher – other than the name Charles and that It appears to be located on State Street. This image was purchased from an old Chicago collection, which makes us wonder if this might be the photographer in the tintype. The image is in very good plus condition with strong tones and contrast. There is some hand tinting to the white man’s face and to the lips of the black man. It appears that it was in a paper sleeve in the past. There are a few spots and we can see the outlines of the paper mat with some other normal wear. Most of this is magnified in the scan and is noticed more at an angle.
