Fantastic CDV of Carter’s Photographic Gallery in Worcester, MA. Milton T. Carter was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 1831, the son of Thomas Carter and Sarah Hovey. In 1850, Milton was living in Worcester, MA as a painter and a year later, on 14 October 1851 he married Sarah H. Hibbard. Milton worked as a painter and grainer in Worcester until around 1865, but in the 1865 Mass. census, Milton was listed as a photographer; his studio was at 301 Main Street. From around 1866 to 1871, he had a studio at 285 Main Street. After that, from 1872 to 1886, he was located at 513 Main Street in Worchester, until his death in November 1886.
In this image, we see Carter’s signage front and center of the corner street view. His studio entrance is on the right hand side with either Carter or an assistant standing by a photographic display case and an additional sign for the establishment. Advertising is on the building for other retailers, including Wholesale Produce Store, S.R Staples Wholesale Grocery, and a store selling flour. The image is in very good plus condition with nice tones and contrast. A couple of small spots and a bump on the top right corner area of the mount as seen.
