Lot 66
Fabulous California cabinet card on a stereoview mount showing Oscar Marshall’s Patented Truck, September 216, 1879. The handwritten identification below the truck states that “the ladders are 62 feet long and raised by two men in 45 seconds. The truck weight is 4600 lbs.” The signage on the front decorative cab reads “Protection Hook and Ladder Co.” Behind is a view of the outskirts of the city of Stockton, CA. With buildings reaching larger heights you can imagine the need for fire protection and other essential services. The image is in very good condition with nice tones. There is some light wear as seen with a couple of bumped corners on the mount.
The image is identified to John Pitcher Spooner, Stockton, CA, 171, 173, & 175 Main Street. It has a nice touch on the photographer’s stamp on the back with the placement of a pitcher, spoon and hook on the back of the camera. Spooner worked for the Bradley-Rulofson Company in San Francisco until moving to Stockton in 1875. A most unique Western image that would fit in any collection.
