Lot 70

Lot 70

Fascinating cabinet card of a man operating a shadoof which is used to retrieve water from a well. One theory has the shadoof dating to prehistoric times in Mesopotamia, as early as the time of Sargon of Akkad while other historians attribute it to the Egyptians. This is obviously a remote area as we see the mountains in the distance.  A small wooden structure that appears to hold wood for the winter is the only building seen. There are some large wood poles leaning against the building and a ladder on the side. Possibly he is about to start construction on the main house. The image is in very good condition with nice tones and contrast. There are some light spots as seen. This is the first shadoof image for us and its doubtful we’ll see another.
