Lot 73

Creative advertising CDV for the Domestic Sewing Machine Company. The company was founded in 1864 in Norwalk, Ohio. By the 1870’s it central office had moved to Broadway and 14th Street in NYC, which is the address on the back. The back also advertises Grover and Baker Sewing Machine Company which was founded in Boston in 1851. Because of financial problems, Grover and Baker was acquired by Domestic in 1875. We were confused with the Red Riding Hood and Wolf theme but evidently the company used fairy tales for their advertisement. We suspect this theme and statue was a store prop to accompany their sewing machine model featured here. This fascinating photo is in very good plus condition with nice tones and contrast. The back advertisement has some wear as seen. We provided an enlargement of the identification below this cool display as we can read Centennial Favorite and there is a Broadway photographer’s name for the image but we can’t decipher either. We would appreciate any information.
