Lot 93

Exciting oversized occupational cabinet card identified on the back as Alfred Farncomb. Through a genealogy search we found this is Doctor Alfred Farncomb, born in New Castle in 1859 and died in 1927. Dr. Farncomb was Medical Faculty of Trinity University Toronto, 1884, and Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, 1884.

The medical content of this image is simply magical. Dr. Farncomb holds a quantity of what appears to be homeopathic vials in his lap. He has an open vial in hand, ready to pour the contents into a small package for a patient. His microscope is on the table next to him with another device we aren’t familiar with and a paper with visible script. There are large bottles on the right with some partially readable labels. One has the letters PULV. In front is a killer tiny skull with possibly needles sticking out from the top of the head, maybe a nod to acupuncture. Another device is on top of the two large books with two unusual large white letters, C and A, on the bindings. There is some type of audio or speaker device on the crate on the right. There are long needles mounted above the speaker. We see wooden prosthetics under the table and a stunning Whites Physiological Manikin proudly displayed. His diploma is on the upper left and the calendar for the E.B. Eddy Company, Hull, Canada is turned to November 1897. Above that is a map of Manitoba. On the back of the card is a personal period ink inscribed note that reads, “Wishing dear Aunt Robson a Merry Christmas from her loving nephew Alfred Farncomb, Dec 25, 1897.”

This fabulous image has gorgeous tones and contrast with some wear as seen. The previous owner had this for over 30 years so don’t miss out on this rare piece. By W.A.B. Chaplin, Newcastle, Ont.
