Breathtaking museum quality half-plate oval British daguerreotype of a stylish older gentleman who has lived through a great deal of history.  You will not find another daguerreotype of superior technical quality and with such extraordinary hand tinting. The vibrant reds of the chair perfectly compliment this stunning rich blue background. The texture the colorist achieved with the fringe on the arm of the chair and the swirling pattern created on the seat of the chair is extraordinary. The sitter’s aged face has the exceptional flesh tones that we have come to admire from the English artists and there appears to be a slight highlight to his great full head of hair. He is dressed in a heavy jacket with wool pants and unique sweater. The previous owner thought this might be Lord Chief Baron Pollock, but we are skeptical and will let the viewer judge. This image still retains its original seals, and we see no need to open it as the glass is clean and there is barely a hint of tarnish. The small spots seen on his jacket are on the glass. It resides in a case that is slightly larger than 6” x 7 ¼” and the velvet mount is easily removed by lifting the ribbon on the right side. It has a stand-up frame on the back which can be displayed separately on your mantle or shelf if desired. Don’t pass on this one as it will be a highlight in any collection!
