Alluring sixth-plate daguerreotype of a handsome gentleman ,identified by a brass mat stamp to the studio of A. Boisseau, Cleveland, O. In a rare example the mat is also dated at the bottom middle as 1855. According to Craig’s Registry, Alfred Boisseau was “listed as a daguerreian in Cleveland, Ohio from 1855 to 1860. His August 4, 1855 advertisement noted that his gallery, at 111-113 Superior Street, was the first to introduce “landscape backgrounds.” Born in France, he lived in New Orleans in 1845 and 1846 and was later noted as being in New York City from 1849 to 1852. He also advertised himself as a portrait painter and there is no evidence he practiced photography prior to coming to Cleveland. This dashing and intense man has been perfectly captured semi-profile by Boisseau. Stylish yet refined, we assume he was in demand in both his business and personal life. His beard has been expertly groomed but, of course, his sweeping wavy hair dominates the show. The up do wave in the front is simply divine. The plate is in very good plus condition with strong tones and contrast with a hint of solarization to his shirt, especially when viewed at an angle. There are a few small spots in the background as seen. The plate had old seals intact and we now have resealed the image with a new glass. It is housed in half of a case. This is a rarely seen photographer with a dated mat making this a must have!
