Lot 12
Lot 12
Strong quarter-plate of an intense young New York Civil War soldier, brass mat stamped for Anson. The hallmark on the plate is also marked Anson. This of course is Rufus P. Anson who Craig’s Registry has listed in “New York City, 1852-1860 and later. In 1852-1853 he was listed at 633 Broadway. From 1853 until the end of our search, he was listed at 589 Broadway.” Already appearing a little concerned, we can’t imagine what the later years were like for this young soldier. He is dressed in a traditional uniform with gold gilding on his stripes and buttons. His hat sits on the table next to him and it appears to have C 2 or C 7. While the contrast and tones are strong the image has some light scratches and swipes as seen. It made its way overseas at some point and the glass ended up on top of the image with the mat on the outside with a preserver. We have now resealed it with a new glass to preserve this historical image and it resides in a beautiful full leather case with a geometric cross design.
