Lot 25

Sixth-plate daguerreotype of a handsome young man. He is identified on the back as William Brooks Van Patten; his middle name taken from his mother’s family name. Accompanying this image is a sixth-plate ambrotype of his parents, Jacob Van Patten and Frances Brooks Van Patten. Jacob was born in Cobleskill, New York and died in Fort Wayne IN. He was married to Mary E Stickles and they had five children. Jacob worked as a machinist. A slender gentleman, Jacob is dressed in a traditional black suit and sports a goatee. You can see the resemblance to his father. The daguerreotype has great tones and contrast with some light tint to his face. It has some scattered spots as seen. Some of these might rinse off with a professional distilled water rinse. The ambrotype has some spotting as seen. Jacobs’s parents were farmers and are starting to show their age from working the land. Both are housed in half case with the identifications attached on the back of the case on a label in ink.
