Spectacular sixth-plate occupational ambrotype of a salesman or company owner posed with a small keg. The name appears to read Granniss and Taylor with an XX in the middle. While we haven’t located the company, we assume this was some type of black powder or whiskey but if anyone has any information it would be appreciated. The dapper gentleman is dressed in his finest, with his large “Lincoln” style top hat tilted in a cocky fashion. He wears a long jacket, heavy vest and wool pants so it appears that he resides or at least travels in a colder climate. He prominently holds his small ledger or order book on his leg with his other hand steadying the keg. We have a feeling this guy could sell a glass of colored water and having you believe it is the best whiskey you tasted! This dynamic occupational portrait has superior tones and contrast, with some green tint to the tablecloth and some tint on his face. There are a number of fine brush lines as seen but when viewing they are insignificant in our opinion. It is housed in an “Eagle in Flight” case, Berg 4-25, with a past repair on the hinge.
