Striking ninth-plate ambrotype of an elegant African American woman. She is dressed in a gorgeous black gown with a matching dark cape, bow and lace gloves. A gold-gilded cameo pin is seen attached to the ribbon to accentuate her white lace collar. She also wears a simple small white bonnet. She is posed perfectly but under close examination her eyes seem quite sad or possibly just tired. The ambrotype is in excellent condition with beautiful tones and contrast. The plate is as best as you will find and still has its original blackened tin backing. It is housed in an equally beautiful brown geometric union case, Berg 3-288. There are a couple of fleabites on two of the rounded corners.
