Lot 31

Even after years of experience, a piece will come that makes you say wow! This quarter-plate ruby ambrotype still life of a celebratory decorative cream pie with a dancing fairy topper certainly falls in that category! Four American flags lead us to believe this was a pie commemorating the end of the Civil War and if we counted the number of tiny stars correctly, it would be shortly after West Virginia became a state in 1863. A pair of white doves just above a floral wreath and beneath the dancing fairy also suggests a celebration of the end of the war. This extremely rare ambrotype is in excellent minus condition with extensive tinting. The tones and contrast are strong and there is a light line on the right side of the fairy in the background. We have also provided a digital photo which shows a slightly lighter version to better view the details. The image is housed in a full case with a little loss on the back and the back rail. Don’t miss on this opportunity as you’ll surely never see it again!
