Lot 32
Exceptional sixth-plate Scottish or English outdoor ambrotype of a woman believed to be Inuit. The previous owner purchased this in Glasgow and thought she was possibly from Greenland. Someone from Greenland suggested to her that the woman was possibly a whaler’s wife. She does appear to be from the Artic or subarctic region. In any event, this is a stunning portrait as she is posed outside in a simple chair and in front of a plain brick building. She wears a lovey dress with a corseted waist and what appears to be a carved black stone pendant. The plate is in excellent minus condition with nice tones and contrast with a couple tiny spots. It is housed in a full English style plain leather case.
