Lot 35
Strong quarter-plate ambrotype of one of NYC’s movers and shakers. This gentleman certainly is a power player with a strong presence and the confidence that comes from being well accomplished in his profession. He cuts a dashing figure with his steely stare, cool long beard and wavy long locks. The sturdy, elaborately carved chair compliments him perfectly. The photographer is identified on a beautiful purple velvet mat to W.S Pendelton, 5 Chatham Square, New York. This is a rarer NYC artist and Craig’s Registry has William S. Pendelton listed at this address from 1857-60. The ambrotype is in excellent minus condition with strong tones and contrast with light tinting to his face and some red on the tablecloth. There is a slight hue that resembles a tarnish ring on the top perimeter. This is as fine of an ambrotype you will find and it is housed in a full geometric union case. It is in very good condition with tiny loss on the edge of the back bottom corner.
