Lot 38

Brilliant sixth-plate ambrotype of a dashing gentleman in a top hat and smoking a cigar, by Bacon’s, 208 Bowery, identified by a brass mat stamp. According to Craig’s Registry this would be Rufus Bacon who operated at this NYC address from 1856-60. Bacon has done a wonderful job creating this casual pose while showcasing the gentleman’s personality! He is surely a businessman of means, probably both respected and feared in the city. The image is in excellent minus condition with brilliant tones and contrast with his cigar having a fiery red tip. It is housed in a great “Eagle in Flight” case, Berg 4-25. The case is in excellent minus condition with a repaired hinge.
