Lovely CDV of a cool Circassian woman by Abraham Bogardus, 363 Broadway, NY. According to Craig’s Registry,Bogardus refitted the old Root Gallery at 363 in 1862. In 1869 he moved into 1153 Broadway but still kept the old address. This stunning image shows the woman in her gorgeous regional outfit artfully posed leaning on the studio chair. If anyone recognizes this woman any, we would appreciate any information as this is not a standard Circassian image we normally see. The Circassian people are a Northwest Caucasian ethnic group and nation that originated in Circassia. The Russo-Circassian War was a 101 year war that ended with the Russians defeating the Circassians in 1864. The Russian Empire employed a genocidal strategy resulting in up to 3,500,000 Circassians either killed or forcibly expelled to the Ottoman Empire. The image is in excellent minus condition with strong beautiful tones and contrast. There is one tiny dark line to the right.
