Lot 65
Lot 65
Powerful CDV of three men in a dramatic pose by Hesler. The man in the center is Samuel Colcord Bartlett. Bartlett was born on November 25, 1817, in Salisbury, NH. He graduated from Dartmouth with honors in 1836 and in 1843 he was ordained a minister. In 1857 he accepted a call to the New England Congregational Church in Chicago; however, he was at once drafted into the work of establishing a theological institution. In 1858 he was installed as a professor of biblical literature and sacred theology and stayed there for nineteen years. In 1877 Bartlett was elected president of Dartmouth College and resigned in 1892 but stayed with the college until his death in 1898. We don’t know the identities of the other two men, but they are likely colleagues at Chicago Theological Seminary or significant benefactors in Chicago. This stunning photo was captured by the illustrious photographer Alexander Hesler. It has rich tones and contrast with a ding to the image center in between Bartlett and the man on the left. There are some light lines that might be pencil marks as seen. On the back there are two identifications for Prof. Haven Fisk Bartlett which are incorrect; this is clearly Samuel Colcord Bartlett, as also shown in a CDV on the website, https://prabook.com/web/samuel.bartlett/3767594.
