Lot 79

Delightful cabinet card of a striking gentleman posed with his parrot and dog on the front stoop of his brick home. Wearing a fabulous striped suit and holding a white woven hat it appears that he just stepped out for a visit with his two companions as the photographer captures his image. The parrot in the large cage has moved slightly while his dog is exceptionally sharp. The dog appears relaxed but their eyes are alert and we can see of hint of teeth from a snarl on the right side.
The image has deep rich tones and contrast with a few spots as seen. While not identified to a photographer it is an English image. There is crown seal on the bottom that reads, “Honi soit qui mal y pense”, which is a French phrase that translates to “Shame on whoever thinks evil of it,” and is a historic motto associated with the British monarchy,  particularly the elite regiments within the Household Cavalry like the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals. There is a date of July 1905 written on the back.
