Fascinating hand tinted cdv with an identification on the back that reads “La ci darem la mano Don Giovanni.” We can’t quite decipher the next line but after that it reads that “it is a souvenir from Charleston, SC, 6^th of April 1866.” It is signed “Wm. A. Walker Sept 1863” below. We found a few famous William Walker’s during this time period. One was William Aiken Walker who was an American painter. Another was William “Singing Billy” Walker, who was known for hymn tunes and wrote a tune book entitled, Southern Harmony. Supposedly by 1866, 600,000 copies had been sold. Unfortunately, none of these photos match the person in this image but maybe there is another connection we aren’t aware of to the performer. Possibly a fun research project for someone. The image has tinting to his eyes, face, hair and tie and there is some light staining as seen.
