Intriguing cabinet card of a three tiered elaborately decorated cake. Possibly this was for a baking contest as the theme of the cake decoration is unclear, which actually makes it more entertaining. There are numerous horseshoes visible but if this was for luck they placed them facing downward – the wrong way! Along the top of the bottom tier we see four pair of women’s white shoes with a cherub in-between. We’re not sure if these are supposed to be ballerina slippers or just flats. The one element that is even stranger is the one arm sticking out on the top of the second tier on the left side. Maybe there is another hand on the other side but that doesn’t make it less weird. The cake has an “Alice in Wonderland” vibe! A cool possibly white chocolate vase is on top of the cake and contains fresh cut flowers. The piping and other decorative elements are amazing; this was a very time-consuming cake to construct even for an extremely talented person. The decorative bell-shaped flowers also add a nice touch. The image is in very good condition with nice tones and contrast. There is a small ding on the mount on the left and some wear on the corners as seen. By J.W. Hodgetts, Grangetown.
