Lot 91
Interesting small format cabinet card (4’x5”) showing soldiers and tents at Ft. McKinney in Wyoming. There is a period ink identification on the back that reads McKinney but someone has written in pencil, 6th Calvary, Ft. McHenry, (wrong fort), Johson, (sic) County Wars. The Johnson County Wars was a range war, 1889-93, that involved wealthy cattle barons fighting with homesteaders and smaller ranches over water, land and cattle rights. Gunmen were hired by the Wyoming Stock Growers Association to eliminate their rivals, leading to US Army involvement. On the left side we see a large American flag flying with another possible regiment flag on the right. There is a soldier holding his rifle with attached bayonet over his shoulder. Two other soldiers, one smoking, are seen on their right with a large chalk board. While it might be possible to decipher we can’t quite read the writing on the board. An officer and another soldier are on the far right. There is a man in the tent behind them placing something on the officer’s desk. The image is in very good minus condition. The tones are slightly one note as seen with some wear.
