Lot 98

Incredible albumen image of California loggers hard at work with a fascinating steam donkey or donkey engine next to the giant redwood tree. Steam donkeys were attached to a yarder for hauling trees from where they were felled to where they would be processed. We can see the chains around the felled tree ready to be moved. A team of horses are off to the left. These guys were bruisers to say the least and the guy standing on the down tree second from the right holds a huge ax.
The image is by A. W. Gilfillan who advertises on the back as a Traveling Photographer, Residences, Family Groups, Views of All Kinds Taken in the Latest and Improved Styles, Pictures Enlarged in Crayon, India Ink & Water Colors, Cal. Gilfillan worked in the Humboldt county area and we found this interesting post online, “Postmaster Dungan can now boast of the neatest post office in Humboldt county. Artist Wilson recently painted its exterior and interior, and it presents a most cheerful and inviting appearance.  Photographer Gilfillan’s display of pictures adds considerable to its attractiveness, July 27, 1894.”
The photo is in very good condition with great detail. The top area is lighter as seen and there are two pinholes where this hung on a wall at one time. The mount measures 7” x 10.”
