Fascinating cdv of the Minnesota River Ferry about to launch a boat that is carrying a man on a wagon pulled by two horses. Two river men are posed on the front of the boat preparing for the trip. According to the Dakota County Historical Society the Minnesota River Ferry operated as early as 1839 moving goods and people to and from Fort Snelling. This was a crucial lifeline of supplies for the Fort, especially during times of conflict. The image was captured by the well-known early St. Paul photographer Joel Emmons Whitney and his Whitney’s Gallery stamp is on the back. The cdv is in very good condition with nice tones and contrast with a hint of wear as seen.
