Stylish Southern cdv of a dashing young gentleman posed in a casual manner with hat in hand. This handsome man certainly doesn’t lack in confidence, and we are sure he had a number of suitors around town. There is a period ink inscription on the back that reads “With the most respectful complements of James Simons….” There is something after Simons that is hard to read. This is possibly James Simons Jr. who was an American lawyer, politician, and newspaper president from South Carolina. He served as Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1882 to 1890 and as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1878 to 1891. Also on August 22, 1861, Simons enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a first lieutenant of company A, Artillery Battalion, Hampton League. There is also a date on the back which reads April, but the year has a smudge and we can’t quite decipher the date. It is in excellent minus condition with strong tones and contrast.
