Classic late 1840’s sixth-plate daguerreotype of a charming young gentleman identified with a brass mat stamp to Webster. While there are a number of Daguerreian’s with that name in Craig’s Registry we suspect this was captured by brothers Edward Z and Israel B Webster. Craig’s has an extensive history on their careers, which started in Poughkeepsie, NY, with subsequent studios opened in Evansville, IN, Louisville, KY, and probably Norwich, CT. Perfectly posed, this happy go lucky man with wavy hair wears a simple jacket, a floral print vest and standard necktie. He is identified with a handwritten note on the silk pad but it is slightly hard to decipher (scan provided). We can tell that the image was presented to a woman named Anna. The image is in very good plus condition with nice tones and contrast. There is one silver prick to a shirt pin for decorative purposes. The plate had an older seal loosely in place and we have resealed it with a new glass. It is housed in a typical floral 1840’s case.
