Sharp odd-sized quarter-plate daguerreotype, (3 ¼” x 4”), of a NYC gentleman posed in semi-profile. When we removed the old intact seal there was a plate mark for Jones & CO, N.Y. According to the “American Daguerreotype” by Floyd and Marion Rinhart, this was a New York City platemaker not widely used, ca. 1848-49. According to the previous owner this was part of an estate of a wealthy New York family but unfortunately the image is not identified. The wide-eyed gentleman certainly looks the part with a wide-lapel jacket, crisp white shirt, and not a hair out of place. The little curl above his ear has been perfectly layered over his part and was certainly styled by a professional. The bright plate is in excellent minus condition with some light tint to his face. We have resealed it with a new glass. It is housed in a beautiful designed case with a high original shine. The hinge has been replaced.
