Lot 9

Wonderful small watch locket that holds a Civil War daguerreotype of a young soldier on one side and a daguerreotype of his father on the other. We will never know if the young man had this with him on the battlefield or if his father treasured it while waiting for news on his survival. Either way, it was surely a sense of comfort in the horrible face of war.  The initials A. J. M. are engraved on the front, but no other identification was included. Both daguerreotypes have strong tones and contrast with some spotting. The gold is bright with some light wear and a little staining or tarnish on the back. There is a hint of a ding that is almost impossible to see, and the pushbutton works easily and closes tightly. It measures approximately 1 1/8” in circumference.
