Lot 18

Vibrant sixth-plate daguerreotype of a painting with a brass mat mark for J. Stimpson. According to Craig’s Registry John Stimpson worked as a daguerreian in Boston, Cambridge and Cambridgeport, Mass. From 1852 to 1854 he was listed in Boston. This Image is from his time in Boston and shows what appears to be a known 18th century Bostonian. If any recognizes him, any information would be appreciated. Stimpson captured this painting in perfect contrast and tones and if it wasn’t for the brush strokes it could be mistaken as being from life. The plate is in excellent condition with some tinting to the man’s face. We resealed it with a new glass and it is housed in a full leather case: Birds, Berg 5-36.
